Legacy
of
Black Wall Street

Back in 1906, O.W. Gurley, a bold Black entrepreneur, purchased forty acres in North Tulsa to create Black Wall Street. By acquiring land and lending capital to residents, he sparked a legendary era of economic prosperity that defined the historic and thriving Greenwood community of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The community's history is deeply rooted in this foundational year and the decades that followed:

The Founder: Ottawa W. Gurley was an Arkansas native and formal postal worker who used his wealth to build rooming houses, a grocery store, and over 100 properties, helping to foster a self-sustaining economy.

The Name: Because of its immense economic success- boasting Black-owned banks, hotels, cafes, and luxury homes -the area was dubbed "Negro Wall Street" (and later "Black Wall Street") by prominent educator Booker T. Washington.

The Peak:  Over the next 15 years, Greenwood grew into a thriving enclave of nearly 10,000 residents with roughly 600 Black -owned businesses, a hospital a public library, and its own bus and taxi services.

The Destruction: Driven by racial envy and the booming economy of Greenwood, a white mob attacked the district on June 1, 1921, burning down homes and businesses in what became known as the Tulsa Race Massacre.
